Four people died and seven others were left nursing injuries following a tragic road accident involving a truck and a PSV Matatu on Wednesday at around 7.00pm along Eldoret –Webuye highway.

The Matatu had eleven passengers on board. The accident occurred at the Turbo bridge, a black spot that has claimed the lives of many over the years.

According to eyewitnesses, three people died on the spot but the driver of the ill-fated matatu belonging to the North Rift Sacco died while undergoing treatment.

“We were approaching the Turbo bridge when I noticed the speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. I discovered the driver had lost control since it was on a free gear forcing me to slow down and park my car,” said John Wafula, an eye witness.

Mr Wafula said the ill-fated matatu that was ahead of them collided head-on with the truck at the bridge.

Kakamega County Police Commander Bernard Muli confirmed the accident.

“The accident involved a truck and 14 seater matatu that was coming from Eldoret,” he said.

Mr Muli said three people died on the spot whereas the driver of the matatu died while undergoing treatment at Lumakanda Sub County hospital.

“Out of the four people who died, we have a young woman and a man to whom we are unable to identify so that there next of kin can be informed. They had no identification documents at the time of the accident,” said Muli.

Bodies of the deceased were taken to Chebaiywa hospital mortuary.
