Mum, daughter charged with trafficking 3-month-old baby for Sh120,000

A woman and her 19-year-old daughter have been charged with trafficking a baby.

Roseline Isendi, 38, and Jentrix Kanga were accused of having conspired on June 6 to sell the baby belonging to the teenage girl.

According to court documents, a villager tipped off officers at Kakamega Police Station of the intention by the two to sell the baby.

A female officer posing as a Canadian national in need of a child of any gender then visited their Eshisiru village in Lurambi sub-county. The accused reportedly offered to sell the infant for Sh120,000.

The "buyer" suggested that they move to Kakamega’s Golf Hotel for negotiations, but drove the suspects to the police station.

Kanga reportedly told police she dropped out of school last year after she was impregnated by a man she only knew as Ken from Kayole in Nairobi. She gave birth on March 18.

She claimed to have moved to her rural home after the boyfriend blocked her numbers and shifted from his residence.

The teenager reportedly told investigators that she wanted to sell the child so she could get money to continue with her studies.

Reports indicate that a nurse at Musanda Health Centre, where the teenage girl delivered, had promised to help them look for someone to buy the child after they explained their predicament.

Mother and daughter denied the charges when they appeared before Kakamega Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng’ on Friday.

They were granted Sh100,000 bond, with surety of the same amount or Sh50,000 cash bail.

The matter will be mentioned on June 21, and heard on August 13.
