Vihiga County Assembly ejects 8 leaders, appoints new ones

Vihiga County Assembly members on Friday held a special sitting where they ousted eight office bearers and elected new ones in a move aimed at streamlining leadership at the House.

Those who were ousted include Majority Leader Andrew Ahuga, his deputy Jackson Musoga, Minority Leader Jenipher Ekhuya and her deputy Zakayo Manyasa, Majority Whip Abdalla Chogo and his deputy Vincent Atsiaya, Minority Whip Tom Atingo and his deputy Wilberforce Kitiezo.

The deputy speaker was saved from the impeachment wave by the speaker as 29 of the 39 assembly members in attendance accused the leaders of incompetence.

The MCAs in particular faulted the majority and minority leaders who they said have failed to set a clear agenda for the House during their two year tenure.

The motion was moved by United Democratic Front (UDF) County Secretary General and nominated MCA Nathan Kamidi whose party is the majority in the house.

New leaders

“UDF, which represents the Amani coalition and ODM which represents CORD, resolved to review their leaders’ performance at the assembly and we jointly agreed to replace them,” he said.

Reading the ruling made after the respective coalitions presented their petitions in a move to change their house leadership, Speaker Dan Chitwah said due proccess had been followed in calling for the sitting and choosing of new leaders.

“A majority of assembly members have yearned for a special sitting to change their leadership. This sitting is within the assembly’s authority,” he ruled.

The speaker also confirmed that 21 out of 25 UDF members had signed on for change of their leadership, while 10 out of 14 in the CORD coalition had signed their petition too.

The new office bearers include: Majority Leader David Ogova and his deputy Shairo Shimanyano, Minority Leader Peter Amuhinda and his deputy Josphat Munai, Majority Whip Wycliffe Masini and his deputy Nathan Kamidi, Minority Whip Clyde Kweya and his deputy Joshua Olao.

The move ousted all the women from the top leadership and the speaker consequently dissolved his panel to pave way for a new one.
