Fish-feed making plant to benefit farmers

Fish farmers in Teso North and South districts will not have to travel long distances to buy feed after the Government donated a fish-feed manufacturing plant.

The Sh780,000 machine, aimed at enhancing fish farming in the region, is part of the on-going Fish Farming Programme that was launched by the Fisheries ministry in 2009.

Teso District Fisheries Officer Jared Agano said the machine would boost production because feeds would be readily available.

Its installation, according to Mr Agano, is ongoing and is expected to solve the fish pellet shortage in the region.

“Fish farmers used to travel long distances to purchase feeds but with the setting up of the manufacturing plant here, the cost of fish production will be much lower,” said Agano.

Agano further said Teso South Fish Farmers Association has benefitted from the machine after the ministry approved their proposal.

The modern plant is an electricity propelled machine capable of producing 2,000 tonnes of fish feed per day, which would be enough to feed 250 standard fish ponds daily.
