Sum outstrips ex-Olympic champ Jebet

Former Olympic 1, 500m champion Nancy Jebet Lagat was beaten at the tape by Eunice Sum of Police during the third Weekend Meeting at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru on Friday.

Sum recorded four minutes, 12.8 seconds to Jebet’s 4minutes 13.1seconds with Moi Airbase Perine Nenkam coming third in 4:17:9.

Sum said she has done some good training for the weekend meetings ahead of world championship in Russia in August.

“Today’s weather was favourable and enabled me to make it,” she told FeverPitch.

She added that she is using the meets to prepare for the World Championships but she is not sure whether she would take part in remaining weekend meetings.

The fourth meeting would be in Thika from April 12-13, fifth in Mombasa from April 19 to 20, sixth in Mumias on April 26-27 and seventh and last one at Chepkoelel University in Eldoret on May 2-4.

Among Athletics Kenya South Rift athletics officials present were chairman John Wachira, secretary Japheth Kemei, treasurer Paul Keriako and Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association chairman Kimutai Ng’etich.

Boniface Mweresa of Laikipia Airbase starred by winning several sprints and he started by clinching the men’s 400m in 46.2 secs.

Vincent Koskei of Prisons followed in 46.6secs with Police’s Newton Rotich being third in 46.8secs.

Mweresa also won the 200m in 21.2 secs beating his closest opponent Josephat Mukoria of LAB  by two seconds.

Alfred Mwai of Lanet was third in 21.7secs.

Laikipia Airbase Helen Obiri another elite athlete won the women 1,500m in 15:49:7 followed by Ann Wanjiru of Police in 16:10:3 while Gladys Chemweno of Thika was third in 16min 10.7secs.

Ugandan Agnes Aneno won the 400metres in 54.9secs relegating Maureen Chelagat of Prisons to the second position in 55.2secs as teammate Silvia Chesebe followed in 55.5secs.

Hiram Osbilah won the men’s 800m in 1:46:14.

He beat Anthony Chemut of Sigonet by six seconds as Cornelius Kiplangat of Sor finished third in 1:47:1.

Javelin: Jane Chepleting of LAB 40.1 metres, Zeddy Cherutich of Kahawa 36.13 metres and Mary Njeri of Police 35.92metres.

Relays – 400x 1 metres: Millicent Ndoro of GSU 50.0secs, Grace Kidake of Rongai 50.3secs and Thika’s Chelangat Ruto 51.8secs.
