Champs Kakamega inch closer to inter-county quarterfinals

Men's football champions Kakamega inched closer to bagging quarterfinals slot of the County Assemblies Sports Association championships after defeating Kitui 3-0, yesterday, in Mombasa.

Koyonzo Ward MCA Harrison Shikuku scored a brace kn the team's victory. 

Arnold Wangila scored the third goal as the champions inched closer to retaining the title. Kakamega started their title defence with a 2-2 draw against hosts Mombasa.

In volleyball, Kitui hit Nakuru 2-0 (25-8, 25-13).

The games, which began on Monday, will end on Saturday and are being held at various venues.

The championships' chairman Peter Imwatok said the games have attracted 39 counties and that they are working with the police and Ministry of Health to ensure Covid-19 protocols are observed.

Athletics and swimming will be held tomorrow and Friday at Shanzu Teachers Training College and Kenya Coast Polytechnic respectively.

Due to few entries, handball will be played on a round-robin format where Lamu, Baringo and Kiambu will battle for top honours at Serani grounds.

Nairobi played host to the inaugural event in 2018, before the games moved to Eldoret.

The event was not held last year due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Come of the disciplines athletes are competing in include football, volleyball, netball, athletics, badminton, squash, swimming, ajua, table tennis and handball.
