University student marries herself after pressure from parents

32-year-old Lulu Jemimah finally gave in to the pressure of getting married by marrying herself.

The Oxford University student stated that her parents often asked her to settle down and she decided to fulfill their wish by planning the ceremony.

The event took place in Kampala, Uganda at the Quepasa Pub on August 27, 2018, and cost roughly Ksh250 which she used to pay for a taxi.

Lulu even sent invites to some of her friends and hired a dress.

A friend who works as a web designer made and printed her invites, and her friend paid to hire her dress, while her brother baked her cake.

She then went ahead to give a speech to her guests explaining the lack of a groom.

As expected, her parents didn't attend the big day but she later went to explain her actions to her mother.

“My father still maintains that he doesn't know what to say.”

Pursuing a Masters in Creative Writing, Lulu reiterated her commitment to her personal goals, highlighting instances when her parents prayed for her to get married.

“I have a strong passion in life and I am committed to achieving my goals at becoming an academic.

'But all my family wanted to ask me was when I planned to get married - which is very important back in Uganda - followed by when I would be having children and starting a family.

'My father wrote my wedding speech when I turned 16. Every birthday my mother prayed for me and in recent years this has included a plea for a good husband,” she revealed.

Lulu holds a BA Media (Film) from the Macquarie University in Australia and started her masters in August 2017.

She has previously worked as a freelance journalist and a communications consultant for the International Organisation for Migration.
