Enforce ban on private security in campaigns

Early last month, the police imposed a ban on all private security guards in political campaigns, including the renowned ‘Men in Black’. This is after the groups were linked to incidents of violence that marred the campaigns of several aspirants in the run-up to party nominations in April. A case in point was the botched ODM rally in Migori, where dozens of people were injured. It later emerged that such groups were behind the violence.

While the ban may not have gone well with everyone, especially the politicians fond of using such illegal groups to cause mayhem in political rallies, it went a long way in restoring peace in political gatherings. And with the campaigns for the August polls having kicked-off officially yesterday, there is likelihood that some politicians may try to flout this directive by using such groups in the guise of providing security to cause chaos. This is because many politicians are fond of breaking the law to their advantage. Maxwell Okwaro, Maseno
