Coronavirus has equalized the rich and the poor

COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli on Thursday said Coronavirus had equalized both the rich and the poor and it was time for Kenyans to unite and fight it.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Atwoli appeared to take a dig at leaders who often seek treatment abroad, suggesting the country needs to look for solutions within.

"We have no political parties, we have no Kieleweke, we have no Tanga Tanga, we have no groups because this virus has equalized everyone.

"It has equalised rich men, thieves, MPs and some have gone into hiding and we cannot hear them. This is the time we should be considerate to one another to make sure we remain united as Kenyans," he remarked.

Adding: "Even those who stole money cannot use it. Hotels are closed, those big buildings and lodgings where they used to go and squander this money have all closed.”

On Wednesday, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe announced that 22 more people had tested positive for the virus, bringing the country’s total to 81.

Kagwe said 21 of the 22 were already in quarantine, saying had the government not taken strict measures, it would have been worse.

Asked about a possible lockdown, the CS said, “There is nothing that is not on the table. We need to prepare substantially before we take any steps.

“It is our responsibility as government to ensure we also protect those who are in marginalized areas.”

Kagwe further warned that due to the fast-rising number of those who are testing positive, Kenyans should prepare for stiffer measures.

On the two patients who have recovered fully, Brenda Cherotich and Brian Orinda, the CS urged Kenyans to continue following the directives issued by the Ministry of Health.

“The virus is here with us and it has caused very many deaths.

“Please quarantine yourself if you have been travelling or you are not feeling well,” he said.
