A politician must be prepared to go to jail — Babu Owino

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who is currently in remand over the shooting of DJ Evolve at a Nairobi club, on Monday, listed several things a politician must be prepared for.

Through his official Facebook page, the legislator labelled them ‘occupational hazards’.

“A politician must always prepare for the following occupational hazards:
1-Must be prepared to serve his people
2-Must be prepared to go to jail
3-Must be prepared to take an asylum
4-Must be prepared to Die
5-Must be prepared to enjoy.

Further, Babu urged the public to remain calm on the matter and said he would give his side of the story once he is set free.

“I urge Kenyans to wait for my side of the story of what happened when I come from my new home at Industrial area prison.

“I also need Justice and it must be served to me. Meanwhile these are occupational hazards,” he remarked.

Just hours after his arrest, Babu said the incident was a culmination of a series of death threats that he has been receiving since 2019.

He said that was enjoying the company of his friends on Friday morning when a large group of ‘aggressive individuals’ surrounded them.

According to him, a melee ensued and there was exchange of gunfire.

“At the turn of the year, I reported an attempted assassination at the Parliament Police Station under OB number OB21/17/11/2019 at 17:28hrs. I have been living under the weight of intimidation and threats by my political opponents.

“Yesterday was the culmination of these efforts by my enemies. While enjoying the company of my friends at a popular Nairobi restaurant, I was surrounded by a large group of aggressive individuals.

“In the melee, there was an exchange of gunfire,” he said.

The MP called on authorities to conduct thorough investigations to get to the bottom of the matter and ensure all those involved are brought to book.
