SUMMARY

In recent weeks, some leaders have appeared to suggest the President will extend his term by making constitutional changes, something he (Uhuru) has rubbished.

Last week, DP William Ruto reiterated the President’s remarks saying he respects democracy.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that he does not intend to extend his term once it comes to an end in 2022.

Speaking while addressing the nation from State House, Mombasa, the Head of State maintained that he has never mentioned staying in office beyond his two terms.

“You are the ones saying that. I outlined my plan from the word go,” he said.

In recent weeks, some leaders have appeared to suggest the President will extend his term by making constitutional changes, something he (Uhuru) has rubbished.

Last week, DP William Ruto reiterated the President’s remarks saying he respects democracy.

“I do not believe the President has any plans to change the Constitution to extend the presidential term limit.

“I say this because I know the President and he respects democracy. And, for the avoidance of doubt, the Jubilee Party has no scheme to change the Constitution and take back this country to the dark days of politics where power stuck in one corner,” he said.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria also echoed similar sentiments saying the President is a gentleman and he will retire in 2022.

“Ignore those claiming that the President wants to extend his tenure. Unless he talks himself, do not take any word from them,” he noted.
