Kelvin Mwangi (Kenyan) and Rejoice Decker (Nigerian) are the new Mr and Miss USIU-A, respectively. The duo was crowned the prestigious titles in a glamorous event held at the Thika Road Mall expo hall. The current title holders Mr. Toni and Ms. Noni, have relinquished their positions, officially paving the way for the new ones to take office.
The battle for the positions is a spirited combat that involves massive physical training, compulsory health education, unprecedented emotional intelligence testing, creativity as well as current affairs examination.
Kevin was a surprise candidate whose psychological know-how talent must have won the hearts of the judges and the audience in general. The fourth-year journalism major demonstrated intellectual presence through answering the judges’ question with a lot of precision yet availing with it his passion for the subject in question.
”One thing that is not taught in schools is emotional intelligence. This aspect of human life is critical for survival, yet little attention has been accorded to it. I think this should be incorporated in our curriculum,” said Kevin amid cheers from the audience.
Rejoice Decker, on the other hand, performed traditional Nigerian dances, clearly exemplifying herself as an enthusiast of her own culture. She did not just attract the attention of judges by her sterling performances on stage but caught everyone’s attention on the handwork she invested in this activity. Throughout the training, Decker demonstrated growth in her physical appearance, emotional intelligence as well as community service.
This annual event is hellbent on social action providing contestants with the opportunity to come up with projects in recognition of community service. The proceeds of this event through the USIU-A student council are channeled to a charitable course of their own.
Mr and Miss USIU are distinguished positions whose bearers become the official student ambassadors for the university. The new titleholders have joined the expansive student leadership under the Student Council. Their job will also include spearheading social action programs in collaboration with clubs and the Student Council.
