Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on Tuesday vowed to take action on police officers who were caught on video beating up a JKUAT student.

In a video that was widely shared on Monday, a number of police officers were seen roughing up a young man who is believed to be a university student.

The officers beat him up using batons and kicked him several times in the head.

CS Matiang’i stated that he observed the incident with concern and action will be taken against any officer who used excessive force.

“I have spoken to the IG and we both agree that firm and decisive action shall be taken against any officer who used excessive force, within the next 24 hours.

“I have observed the events at JKUAT today with profound concern. The use of force by police is clearly outlined in the National Police Standing Orders,” said Matiang’i.

JKUAT students held demonstrations on Monday over rising cases of insecurity in Juja and cited a number of instances where students were stabbed and robbed near the institution.

They added that the attacks happen as early as 7pm and their lives are in danger.

The confrontation between the officers and the students led to a huge traffic snarl-up along the busy Thika Superhighway and at some point, touts and drivers engaged the students in running battles in a bid to clear the road.
