Uhuru, Raila reserve special praise for Eliud Kipchoge

Following Eliud Kipchoge’s outstanding performance during the 'INEOS 1:59 Challenge' in Vienna, Austria, where he completed the marathon in just under two hours, President Uhuru Kenyatta was full of praise for the athlete.

The Head of State lauded Kipchoge for making Kenya proud, adding that his achievement will go a long way in inspiring future generations.

"Hearty congratulations Eliud. You've done it my brother, you've made history and made Kenya super proud while at it.

“Your win today, against all odds, will inspire tens of future generations to dream big and to aspire for greatness. We celebrate you and wish you God's blessings,” said President Kenyatta.

His sentiments were echoed by ODM leader Raila Odinga who said Kipchoge had held Kenya’s flag high.

“This is the stuff of history @EliudKipchoge. You captured the imagination of the whole world before this great feat and it will continue for a long time.

“Congratulations on becoming the first human to run a sub 2hour marathon,” said Odinga.

The challenge dubbed ‘INEOS 1:59 Challenge’ was staged in Vienna, Austria on Tuesday, with a total of 41 pacesetters from different counties flanking the world-marathon record holder.

Kipchoge crossed the finish line at 1:59:40.

“I am feeling good. It has taken 65 years for a human being to make history in sports; after Sir Roger Bannister,” said a delighted Kipchoge after the race.

“I have tried. I am the happiest man to run under 2 hours to inspire many people; to tell people that no human is limited, you can do it. I am expecting more athletes from all over the world to run under 2 hours,” he added.
