Prisoner makes daring escape from Kericho jail

A prisoner serving a five-year sentence has made a daring escape from Kericho Medium Prison.

Credible sources indicate that Geoffrey Kiprotich, who was convicted and sentenced for an offense of malicious damage to property slipped from warders’ hands today at midday.

The convict was among a group of other prisoners who had been mobilised to pluck tea at the prison's farm in the outskirts of Kericho town.

The officer in charge of the prison, Senior Superintendent of Prisons (SSP) Shadrach Kinoti could neither deny nor confirm the incident.

"Tell whoever gave you my number to give you the full details. I am in another function right now," he said and hung up.

A spot check by the Standard around the prison noted the prison wardens are searching possible hideouts around the tea plantation and its neighbourhood.

Sources indicate that the escapee comes from Nandi county and had been recently transferred to Kericho from Kapsabet prison.
