Wamlambez, Tetema not illegal — Ezekiel Mutua

The Kenya Film Classification Board CEO Ezekiel Mutua has moved to clear the air regarding banning Diamond’s Tetema and Sailors’ Wamlambez songs.

Through a post on social media, Mutua clarified that the songs are not illegal but are definitely not suitable for children.

He likened the situation to that of alcohol consumption saying beer is not illegal but has an age restriction.

“The songs Tetema and Wamlambez that we have restricted are not illegal. They are just not suitable for children.

“Just the same way beer is not illegal, but there is an age restriction on alcohol consumption to protect children,” he said.

Further, Mutua reiterated that artistes who do not want their content to be restricted should churn out songs that are suitable for all ages.

“Content with scenes or language meant for adult audiences should not be aired during the watershed period (5 am-10 pm).

“In respect to stage performances, the plays, songs or performances are either suitable or not suitable for children.

Beer is legal in Kenya, but you cannot serve it in a school event where children are present. Adult content too should not be played in school or in public places frequented by children. Simple!” said Mutua.

This week, the KFCB CEO was bashed for restricting Tetema and Wamlamez to clubs and bars.

He argued that the songs are too explicit and their hidden meanings are pornographic.
