Mystery over Homa Bay fire fighting machines detained at the port

The county assembly has started investigations into circumstances that led to the detention of three vehicles at the Port of Mombasa.

Speaker Evans Marieba said the two fire engines and an ambulance worth millions of shillings were donated by a charitable organisation in the United Kingdom three months ago.

When the vehicles failed to be delivered on time, members of the disaster management committee travelled to Mombasa to find out what was causing the delay.

They found that a logistics company had detained the vehicles until the county could account for the whereabouts of two containers used to transport excavators to the county in 2017.

“We saw the fire engines and ambulance in Mombasa. The company is withholding them until the county replaces the containers worth Sh5 million,” the committee reported.

County Secretary Isaiah Ogwe confirmed that they had released the containers. "But it seems they got lost on the way,” he said.

Majority Leader Walter Muok said they would summon the officials from the executive to explain why the equipment had not been delivered.
