Three terror suspects were on Monday gunned down when the police repulsed an attack at Kiunga area in Lamu County.

According to the police statement seen by the Standard Digital, the attackers planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which was targeting police patrol unit in the area, which borders Somalia.

The IED exploded and two police officers were severely wounded as a result.

It partially read: “The explosive device targeted a Kenya border security patrol unit. The explosive was reinforced with an ambush targeting the BSP. 2 BSP officers were critically injured while 3 terrorists were gunned down… The border security unit members engaged the attackers and repulsed the attack killing 3.”

The police have blamed the Somalia-based terror group Al-Shabaab for the attack. However, the officers have exuded confidence that the terror cells suspected to be operated in the area lack facilities, hence they will not pose any serious security breach.

“The Somali terror group Shabaab Mujahideen has cells that continue attempts to breach the border area. The cells target security personnel with improvised explosive devices and armed ambushes. Though heavily armed, the cells activities are limited due to lack of essential supplies such as bullets and food,” read the police statement.
