A matador was gored up his backside by a bull - leaving him with a ten-inch wound to his rectum - as spectators screamed in horror.

The French bullfighter, Juan Leal, was lifted off the floor for a few seconds as the bull drove its right horn into his bottom.

Blood covered the back of Mr Leal's torn trousers after the horn went straight through his gluteal region.

The matador carried on despite suffering the painful ten inch (25cm) wound to his rectum and a possible fracture of his sacrum, or sacral spine, and he later killed the bull and posed with its severed ear.

Mr Leal walked to the infirmary once he was finished with the bull in a Madrid bullring. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Doctors said he suffered a 25cm wound in his rectum with and an exit hole in the gluteal region.

Footage shows the bull charging at the matador's cape a number of times after it had already been stabbed with several banderillas - sticks with spiked ends.

At one point the bull makes a number of close passes while Mr Leal is on his knees to the crowd's delight.

But moments later spectators scream in horror as the bull makes another close pass and then turns quickly.

Mr Leal appears to be caught off guard, and the bull drives it's right horn straight into the matador's bottom.

The bullfighter is lifted off the ground for a few seconds and then thrown to the dirt as two men rush in to distract the bull and save him.

Mr Leal - covered in blood and dirt - climbs back onto his feet and hobbles away in obvious pain while holding his hand to his backside.

He hunches over as he walks and is soon surrounded by fellow matadors as the crowd applauds him.

Mr Leal carried on and eventually drove his sword into the bull.

He was later pictured holding up one of the animal's ears as he was saluted by the crowd during the San Isidro festivities.

The back of his trousers are bloodstained and torn, revealing his underwear.

After walking to the infirmary Mr Lea was rushed to hospital where he was operated on.

His surgeon, Máximo García Leirado, later said: "I can't understand how managed to continue the fight and kill the bull afterwards because a normal person wouldn't have been able to even stand up or walk.

"It was fortunate that the horn hit the sacrum and then slid upwards, rather than penetrating his stomach.

"Doctors say he should make a full recovery but will need to rest and avoid any infections."

The sacrum is a large and flat triangular-shaped bone between the hip bones and just above the tailbone.
