Supersonic passenger plane that can travel at over 3,000miles per hour to be developed

News

Flights from London to New York could be cut down to just 90 minutes, thanks to a new Supersonic Aircraft in development.

Hermeus has announced that it is developing a supersonic aircraft that can travel at speeds of over 3,000 miles/hour.

The tech startup has received funding from Khosla Ventures, which will allow them to start developing the aircraft.

Vinod Khosla, the founder of Khosla Ventures, said: “Hermeus is developing an aircraft that not only improves the aviation experience with much reduced flight times but also has the potential to have a great societal and economic impact.”

While details on the aircraft remain unclear, Hermeus claims that it will be capable of flight in excess of Mach 5.

At this speed, flight times from New York to London will be reduced from seven hours to just 90 minutes, according to Hermeus.

The startup has a range of impressive board members with a wealth of experience under their belts.

This includes Rob Meyerson, Former President of Blue Origin, and Rob Weiss, Former EVP/GM at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works.

Mr Meyerson said: “With experience from the best of NewSpace companies, the Hermeus team is well positioned to disrupt the hypersonics industry.”

Hermeus faces stiff competition from several other firms, who are racing to be the first to launch a commercial hypersonic aircraft.

Lockheed Martin is working on an aircraft called the X-59 Quiet Supersonic Technology craft, while Boeing has revealed a concept for a supersonic jet that will also travel at Mach 5.

We’ll have to wait and see who gets their aircraft to the skies first!
