The 26-year-old husband refused to give her the password and the pair got into an argument.

A wife has been arrested on suspicion of burning her husband alive after the pair rowed over his phone password.

Dedi Purnama was working to repair roof tiles on the couple's home when his wife, Ilham Cahyani, asked for the password to his phone, according to local media.

The 26-year-old husband refused and the pair got into an argument.

East Lombok Police Chief Made Yogi says Purnama then climbed down from the roof and hit his wife as the argument continued.

Dedi Purnama, 26, had been working to repair the roof tiles when his wife confronted him.

That sparked a physical encounter and Cahyani reportedly grabbed a petrol can and poured the flammable liquid over her husband before setting him alight using a lighter.

A witness identified as Oji told reporters he had run over to the scene after spotting the flames and helped put them out.

Purnama was rushed to the Keruak Health Centre and underwent treatment for two days for the horrific burns he sustained.

Photos show large parts of the 26-year-old's upper body severely burnt as he lies on a mattress.

Purnama died after two days in the health centre despite the doctors' best efforts.

Cahyani has been arrested and reportedly remains in custody at East Lombok Regional Police Station, although it is unclear if she has been charged.

The investigation is ongoing.

He died in hospital days after suffering the burns.
