The world and Kenya was stunned after Eliud Kipchoge won the 45th edition of the BMW Berlin Marathon in Germany on Sunday, smashing the world record at just 2:01:39.
The legendary Kipchoge, who won in Berlin in 2015, defeated Amos Kipruto who finished the race in 2:06:20.
The 2013 Berlin Marathon champion Wilson Kipsang settled third in 2:06:47.
Following his superb performance, the 33-year-old said that he would defend his title in 2019 hoping to break his current record.

"I had great belief that I could achieve this feat and running a sub 2 hours two minutes was simply amazing and I believe I can still go below that with such good conditions. I could have posted better times if he went with the pacesetters up to 30km mark.
"The last pacesetter went out at 25km mark but that still inspired me to continue pushing alone," explained Kipchoge adding that he shall defend his title perhaps with another new record next year. "Berlin forever! I shall come back here next year,” said an elated Kipchoge.
In the women’s edition, Kenya’s Gladys Cherono crossed the finish line first in two hours, 18 minutes and 11 seconds to win the marathon in Berlin.
Ethiopian duo Aga Ruti and Tirunesh Dibaba finished second and third – clocking 2:18:34 and 2:18:55 respectively.
Another Kenyan, Edna Kiplagat finished fourth in 2:21:18.
