Matatu conductor beaten to death by colleagues for ‘overcharging’ passengers in Kasarani

A matatu conductor operating the Mwiki-Kasarani route was beaten to death by his colleagues for allegedly overcharging passengers.

The Mwiki Sacco Limited (MSL) officers allegedly clobbered the victim, Julius Kamau, for charging passengers bus fare of Sh100 instead of the normal Sh80.

The MSL officers are said to have assaulted Kamau accusing him of tarnishing the Sacco’s name after asking customers how much they were charged.

According to the victim’s wife Winfred Kimanzi, her husband returned home with a swollen face and injuries in the mouth.

“He came home and showed me the injuries. His face was swollen and he also had been injured in the mouth…He told me he did not see the point of charging the passengers Ksh.80 then drop them off at Stima area and leave them stranded looking for another vehicle to take them to Mwiki. So he decided to charge Ksh.100 then go straight to Mwiki,” said Winfred.

Kamau, however, died on his way to the hospital.

“As we were taking him to the hospital, he was complaining of severe body pain, so much that he could barely walk,” Winfred added.

When contacted, the MSL Sacco denied claims that the officers who attacked Kamau were theirs.
