Felling, importation of timber products allowed but under strict controls

The Ministry of Environment said the ban on timber harvesting on all public and community forests was still in force.

Private timber growers in commercial forests can now harvest trees but under tight controls.

The Government yesterday sought to clarify the scope of the 90-day moratorium on logging issued on February 24, saying movement permits issued by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) would now be required for all timber products from private forest plantations.

The Ministry of Environment however said the ban on timber harvesting on all public and community forests was still in force.

In a statement, Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko said logging on private plantations would be permitted with “joint verification and confirmation" of source.

Timber imports and products will also require movement permits after verification and payment of levies.

Mr Tobiko said permits would have enhanced security features. The KFS has also been directed to maintain accurate records for all timber and timber products.
