I refuse to be sworn in alongside Uhuru, Raila tells supporters

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga will not be sworn in on Tuesday, November 28. Raila made this known on Saturday, November 25 after a meeting at Maanzoni Lodge, Machakos county.

This announcement came as many NASA supporters speculated on what Raila would say. Many had anticipated that Raila’s swearing-in ceremony would be parallel to President Uhuru’s.

NASA leaders, led by Siaya Senator James Orengo had vowed to swear in Raila using the August 8 elections. They claimed that Raila won fairly in that election.

“We will use August 8 results to swear NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga if Uhuru Kenyatta tries to use October 26 poll results to be sworn in,” Orengo said on October 28.

Orengo addressed supporters in Mavoko, Machakos County where he was accompanied by Mavoko MP Patrick Makau, Former senators Bonny Khalwale (Kakamega) and Johnstone Muthama (Machakos).

Raila declined calls by many NASA leaders to be sworn in quoting his international political image and respect for law as his reasons for backing off.

Although he disagrees and disrespects Uhuru as the legitimate President of Kenya, Raila chose not to be sworn in himself.

A report from the Maanzoni lodge where the party reached a five-point resolution says that NASA members have not individually and collectively delegated their sovereignty to Uhuru Kenyatta.

Musalia Mudavadi, NASA co-principal who was also in the meeting ensured supporters that NASA will follow legal processes to fight Uhuru’s presidency even after Supreme Court upheld it.

NASA will instead hold a memorial service for people who died under police brutality last week when supporters went to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome Raila back. The memorial is set for Jacaranda in Embakasi.

Nairobi police commander Japhet Koome has said that the police are not aware of the planned Embakasi event and that legal action will be taken against those who are involved.

Government spokesman Eric Kiraithe had earlier warned that any assembly called to unlawfully execute a purpose would be treated as breaking the law.
