Stray lion mercilessly feasts on drought-surviving cows in Kajiado

A stray lion killed five cows belonging to a local herder yesterday morning.

The marauding lion broke into the cow shed next to the herder's house.

According to the herder, Lankeu ole Sankaire, the five animals killed were the last of his herd of 100 that was wiped out by prolonged drought.

"I have been reduced to a poor man overnight. I do not know what to do next," he said.

During the incident, a man narrowly escaped being mauled by the lion.

Residents now want Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to capture the stray lion, saying it has been attacking people and killing livestock for some time.

"KWS is aware of this particular lion, it has been a thorn in the flesh for us," said Morris Saruni.

They said despite the numerous attacks, affected farmers have not received compensation from the wildlife agency.
