OPINION: Kenyans are paying heavily for IEBC's failures

Kenya has found herself in a political quagmire because the electoral commission failed to carry out its mandate. And by so doing, they have wasted billions of taxpayers’ money and time.

It is astonishing that no one at the electoral commission has taken responsibility for the irregularities and illegalities the Supreme Court judges cited when they overturned President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory.

Yet, we continue to waste more money on repeat elections we are not even sure will take place, still with doubts about fairness and credibility. There are questions about what IEBC has done to ensure the repeat poll is credible.

Many expected IEBC to punish those who bungled the elections because the computers were not operating themselves. IEBC should also have recruited new returning officers, who reflect the face of Kenya.

The commission has also not engaged all stakeholders to win their confidence.

Kenya should be the leader in democracy in Africa but that is no longer the case because IEBC is messing up.
