Student who stabbed boyfriend may escape jail term because of her 'intelligence'

A university student may not be sentenced to jail after stabbing her boyfriend simply because her career is too precious to lose.

According to reports, Lavinia Woodward, who had met her boyfriend on Tinder, stabbed him with a bread knife after a drinking spree went south.

The Oxford University medical student stabbed her boyfriend in the leg before throwing a can of jam, a laptop and a glass at him. The incident took place at Christ Church College– as a court was informed.

Lavinia, who aspires to be a heart surgeon admitted to a charge of ‘unlawful wounding’ and the judge, Ian Pringle proposed a custodial sentence for the offence. However, the sentencing was delayed for a period of four months, with hints surfacing that she might not be jailed after all – sighting her “extraordinary” abilities as a reason.

The student who is also a drug addict will be allowed to return to college in October because of her intelligence in writing. Most of Lavinia’s articles have already been published in top medical journals. According to Judge Pringle, it would be unfair to jail such an intelligent mind and her career would be affected.

"It seems to me that if this was a one-off, a complete one-off, to prevent this extraordinary able young lady from not following her long-held desire to enter the profession she wishes to, would be a sentence which would be too severe. What you did will never, I know, leave you but it was pretty awful, and normally it would attract a custodial sentence, whether it is immediate or suspended, “said Judge Pringle during the hearing.

Cathy Oliver, the Prosecutor, said that Tinder was where Lavinia met her boyfriend and that her behavior deteriorated when she decided to stab him.

Her boyfriend, Skyped Lavinia’s mother before he was attacked – punched in the face and stabbed in the leg by a bread knife.

Mr. James Sturman who was in Lavinia’s defense, said that the girl had a very troubled life, was abused by her former lover and that it would be impossible to her to become a surgeon if she was sentenced. He also claimed that Lavinia would be allowed to go back to college. However, one of the college’s spokepersons effused to comment on the matter.

She was given a restraining order, warned not to use drugs or commit any other offence. Sentencing is set to be done on the 25^th of September.
