Man inch away from killing brother over Sh2, 200

A 21-year-old man escaped death on Tuesday night when he was rescued from his brother who was only an inch away from throwing him out the third floor balcony of their rented residential house at 9 p.m. for allegedly stealing from his cousin.

Ezra, not his real name is said to have traveled from their rural home in Ukambani when his elder brother asked him to come to the city and work as a casual labourer at a construction site in the area but could not secure a place for close to a month. His elder brother yesterday landed on him with blows threatening to kill him when he admitted having stolen Sh2, 200 from their cousin’s wallet while they were asleep.

Ezra and his cousin share a room and have been staying in the 2-bedroomed house with his married brother working as a mechanic in town.

He had argued with his brother over the lost money but after he could not keep up with lies, he opted to admit having taken the money and used it to buy alcohol for his new friends.

“I only have Sh200 as I already spent the other money at the pub with my friend. The money fell from his trouser and I took but they are insisting that I stole,” he explained in tears.

Ezra could not go back to his brother’s house as he had been terrified by his elder brother’s attempt to harm him over the argument and had literally chased him as hundreds watched in the night saying he would not spare a thief.

“I had to run away after neighbours got him off as he was trying to push me down from the balcony but could not, he said he wanted to kill me,” said Ezra.

His brother’s wife has blamed her husband for what Ezra had turned into accusing him of introducing the 21-year to weird drinking habits instead of giving him the job he promised when bringing him to the city.

“He always picks him from the house on most evenings and buys him a lot of alcohol. They come home drunk and he has not given him a job that could earn him money for drinking. It is him who has made Ezra a thief,” she said.

She had asked her husband to leave his brother at home whenever he went out for drinking but says her plea went ignored.
