EPL: Chelsea’s title hopes dented by Manchester United

Chelsea's hopes of clinching their sixth Premier League title suffered a setback after losing 2-0 to Manchester United on Sunday. Marcus Rashford gave United the lead in the seventh minute, thanks to a clinical interception by Ander Herrera, that saw the Englishman beat David Luiz to squeeze a shot past Asmir Begovic into the left bottom corner.

The first half was purely dominated by the Red Devils, as Chelsea’s key men- Eden Hazard and Pedro were marked by Herrera and Matteo Darmian. Just four minutes after the break, Herrera’s shot was deflected by Kurt Zouma to send Begovic the wrong direction, sending United fans in celebration at Old Trafford. Antonio Conte’s men, who could not manage any shot on target in the 90 minutes, saw their lead at the top of the table cut to four points over Spurs. Consequently, United extended their unbeaten run in the Premier league to 21 matches. Jose Mourinho is now fifth and could move within a Champions League place if he wins the game in hand.

In another fixture, Liverpool secured a vital 1-0 away win thanks to Roberto Firmino’s header in the stroke of the half-time. The Reds are now third with 66 points after 33 games. Tottenham Hotspurs thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 at White Hart Lane in the Saturday’s early kickoff. Moussa Dembele broke the deadlock in the 16th minute before Heung-Min Son doubled the lead three minutes later.

Harry Kane struck early in the second half to take his tally to 20 goals this season for Spurs. Kane also joined Thierry Henry, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, and Alan Shearer as the only players who have scored 20 goals and above in three successive seasons. Vincent Jansen came off the bench to score in the stoppage time.

After playing to a goalless first 45 minutes at St. Mary’s, Manchester City scored thrice in the second half to keep themselves well placed in the top four. Captain Vincent Kompany opened the account with a stunning header, scoring for the first time since august 2015. Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero scored in a space of three minutes to overcome resilient Southampton on a 3-0 overall score line.

Arsenal travel to Riverside Stadium to take on Middlesbrough tonight.
