Perks of being a campus introvert

Not all of us are meant to hang out with a thousand friends, stay late partying or get social with others quickly.

Introverts are usually reserved and prefer to talk less in social situations. In campus, they may not be the 'fun' crowd but that shouldn't affect them negatively because just like with everything, there are advantages that come with being naturally introverted.

Strong sense of self

"I like my individuality as an introvert. I like that I get to focus on what I like when I'm alone and don't have to necessarily accommodate activities that I'm not interested in," says Douglas, a student at the Technical University of Kenya.

Most introverts are usually introspective. This means that time spent alone is used figuring out who they are as a person and this gives them a strong sense of who they are.

Time

If you have a friend who is an introvert or has introverted tendencies, you'll realize they like to keep to themselves.

This means that they get the time to put their energy into goals they've set for themselves.

This might be as simple as reading a book. Margaret, a student at Moi University says that "I don't socialise with people a lot and it has been like that since I was younger.

Now that I'm on campus I've taken this 'alone' time to do a short course on networking since I'm in the field of information technology."

Loyalty

Have an introvert for a best friend. Why? They are loyal. They have fewer friends whom they feel close to. This means that they take friendships seriously.

Campus students are a young bunch who enjoy socialising and having good times with others.

This is challenging to introverted students who for them it takes time before they open up to others.

Once they do, they tend to make lasting connections laced with a strong sense of loyalty. They will always have your back.

Less trouble

Student riots, bar brawls, cat fights are scenes likely to be avoided by introverts. Because of their reserved nature, introverts are not often engaged in activities that will lead to public confrontations.

The upside to this is that their life is filled with a lot of calm which helps them thrive.

There are celebrities who are also known to be introverted and they are still as popular. They include Jessica Chastain and Johnny Depp.

They are deeply shy but that hasn't stopped them from being successful in their careers.

In the end, it's all about finding comfort in how you were created and making it work for you.
