ALL EYES ON ALEGO CONSTITUENCY AS THE PARLIAMENTARY RACES HEATS UP.

The race for Alego Parliamentary seat heats up with the latest entry of an astute young energetic city based lawyer-Evans Umidha Oruenjo.Mr. Umidha becomes the latest candidate to jump into the race that has attracted about four aspirants including the current MP.

At 29, Mr. Umidha not only becomes the youngest aspirant for the seat but joins a club of youthful aspirants in the country who have shown interest in various elective positions in the coming general elections. This follows the move by ODM Party elections board to extend the deadline for aspirants to submit application papers for various elective posts by ten days.

The youthful MP hopeful who will be fighting for the ODM ticket together with veteran politicians like Hon.Yinda,Sammy Weya, has for the past few days taken the constituency by storm as he tries to make inroads in the vast constituency.

He says he is not fazed by the big names since he expects the campaigns and nomination to be issue based and not propaganda or intimidation. He has embarked on a door to door campaign in order to marshal maximum votes.Mr.Umidha runs a middle size law firm in Nairobi where he represented a voter in

Mathare constituency who successfully challenged Gor Selemang’o’s candidature in the previous Mathare by-election. All eyes will be set on the constituency in the yet to be named ODM party nominations date.

In 2013, the nomination was characterized by cases of irregularities which later cost the party the seat. Therefore one would expect that having lost the crucial seat in the last elections to its Cord affiliate –Wiper Party, the Party will do everything within its means this time to ensure that it conducts a nomination process that is acceptable to not only to all the contestants but to the Alego constituents too.

The young lawyer who also happens to be the son of a long time Siaya Mayor, says that he is self-made and will not be riding on his father’s household name or impeccable development record.

Having been born and raised in the constituency, he knows pretty well the challenges facing his constituents. He is banking on the women and youthful voters who comprise the largest percentage of the total registered voters in his bid to unseat the incumbent-Honorable Omondi Muluan.

Immediately after he presented his applications at Orange House early this week, he outlined his vision for Alego Constituency. First on his agenda is to bring back the constituency to the national limelight by presenting motions that will serve the interest of Alego people and the nation at large.

Besides, he promised to introduce school feeding programme in all the over 50 public primary schools in the constituency in order to increase retention of pupils in school while at the same time ensuring equitable distribution of bursaries and scholarships to the needy, orphans and vulnerable children with an aim of increasing accesses to education.

This would greatly improve the performance of the schools in the national exams.

And to the youth, he promised to introduce a number of empowerment programmes in all the wards targeting the large reserve army of jobless youths. He said this will make them self-reliant as they will have alternative sources of income especially in a region where youths depend on handouts from politicians during elections.

If elected, he will join the list of Hon.Silvance Osele-MP Kasipul and Hon Kinoti Gatobu MP-Buuri as the third youngest MP to have ever been elected in the country.
