ZAGAZAGA MOVEMENT WINS ALL POSTS IN STUDENTS' ORGANIZATION AT MASENO UNIVERSITY

Maseno university students on Friday held peaceful elections in which a movement dabbed Zagazaga had all its aspirants for the students’ organization (SOMU) emerging victorious across all campuses.

"The movement was formed to give a national outlook in leadership in line with the government directive requiring institutions to phase out all ethnic groups which played a central role in student’s elections in most universities" the Zagazaga leader Mr. Abok Kiche said.

Mr. Fredrick Makajos, the president elect garnered 2445 votes against Gideon Wafula and Mike Odoyo’s 1438 and 1009 respectively in the second and third place.

“In seeking his bid to be elected as SOMU president, Makajos resolved to have a coalition formed to represent all ethnic groups in the students’ union so as to avoid ethnic favoritism and support the national leadership initiative of uniting all Kenyans,” said Mr. Abok.

The unopposed Isaac Kinyua will serve as SOMU Vice President while Linus Kipsigei was unanimously elected as Secretary General after diligently serving as the director Sports during the previous academic year.

Other members of the movement elected include Tony Asiago (Deputy Sec Gen.), Brightstar Kasyoka (Finance Secretary), Timothy Simuyu (Dir Entertainment), Bensam Okuku (Dir Academics), Abuto Martin (Dir Health), Alvin Simiyu (Dir Sports) and Ogutu Wycliffe (Dir Security)

At the institution’s Kisumu City Campus, early on Friday, the students roughed up campaign teams found to be bribing supports to influence their choices at the ballot.

Mr. Paul Kevin Wahonya emerged victorious, clinching the campus chairman seat.

Heavy police presence had been witnessed during the exercise which ended peacefully with students’ celebrations.

A section of students celebrating hung on a police vehicle which was ferrying the officers from the premises after manning the two days exercise.
