Bunyala West has chosen to rally on love- Obukheri

About four months ago, a group of young people from Bunyala West ward, Budalangi constituency, launched a campaign to change the face and shape of the area as we knew it. An initial 26 member group rallying under the banner of #MakeWestBest forged a united front to, in their own words, turn the tide for an administrative ward that strategically sits between Lake Victoria and River Nzoia but which unfortunately, doesn't enjoy the benefit of these resourceful water bodies, notwithstanding the sandwiching.

The socio democratic campaign is founded on the premise of making life better for the residents of Bunyala West who are fisher folks by inherent reasons of geographical location, sitting adjacently to Sigulu Island in Uganda. Four Months have provided a critical blackboard to learn and interact with our people; to understand the issues that afflict them from day to day which the #MakeWestBest seeks to use socio political instruments to address. These young people's regiment, growing steadily has interacted with challenges that must be confronted by the ward leadership if indeed Bunyala West is to be best.

Education, as we know it, is a turnkey to many society's problems, trouble with the arrangement in Bunyala West is the inability of ward leadership to equitably allocate the bursary funds to cater for all needy and deserving students. Siting adjacent to Lake Victoria, the ward could harness use the lake water and practice irrigated farming. That however, is not happening because the ward leadership lacks the brilliance and foresight to rally the citizenry around such a noble initiative. Ours, which we have called, #RallyingOnLove, campaign has in the initial, championed a socio-economic programme that is providing blankets to women in our villages- all 10 of them.

That is a first phase of the initiative which intends to; going forward, donate indigenous chicks in order to address food as well as small income needs. Also key to this movement is that Bunyala west can be reticulated with fresh, clean water from the lake that is affordable, even free, to the residents. We intend to cross the ward to the side of meaningful devolution that affords quality health care, growth of talent for the youth, employment and trade opportunities, empowerment through to women and youth through socio economic groups, boost trade and create value for the fishing industry in Bunyala west. That is a commitment that the young people in Bunyala West have made; one that seeks to turn the tide, to #MakeWestBest.
