As we await Monday's demos and teargassing

The Monday demonstrations by Kenya’s Opposition keep reminding me of the period prior to 2007 election. The heat was gradual then and we did not anticipate things would go haywire after the presidential elections. We were caught in slumber and everything turned bloody.

Post 2007 elections’ period was an unfortunate, deadliest and most dreadful moment for Kenyans as the world watched in amazement as we maimed and massacred our neighbours, friends and equally our foes. For some, it was an opportune moment to enjoy international media coverage as they made ruthless and unruly incitements.

And then, we have began the rehearsals once again. The precipitation and perspiration has just kicked off. Rehearsing to kill and destroy property, our very own. Isn’t it stupid of us?

I feel indebted for not saying anything about the “Machozi Monday” and today I should make that move and just get out of the unlikely mum.

First, I am not contented with IEBC in its current state. But I am not in the streets demonstrating and getting to do some flexing. I have my gym in my house, so I can flex and perspire anytime I want. Am I patriotic enough? Indeed I am, more than the self-proclaimed street gym trainees and trainers in CORD.

I too need to satisfactorily elect the leaders I want and be relatively sure that the leaders I choose are the very  ones that are certified by the electoral body. Nevertheless, I also respect the law that creates these independent institutions. If I want IEBC composition restructured, which I do, I would follow the Constitutional process of refining the electoral commission.

And as tomorrow will be our usual “maandamano yameruhusiwa na katiba” day, we ought to rethink what kind of ‘erections’ we anticipate in 2017, 10 years after the ill-fated 2007 disputed presidential elections.
