Divorce laptops from politics

It was commendable to see the Government deliver laptops to pupils in some schools while promising to roll out the digital programme fully before the end of the year.

What is interesting, however, is how both the national and county governments are determined to fulfill their pre-election pledges.

Many see this rush as a means to hoodwink the electorate to re-elect the incumbents bearing in mind that the two levels of government have in the past three years performed below expectations.

Politicians should not wait until campaigns to start delivering on their pledges.

I salute Jubilee leaders for fulfilling the pledges they made during their campaign in the year 2013.

We have been crossing our fingers that they would deliver on all their promises and now we have started to see the fruits.

The Ministry of Education has started to supply the laptops to school across the country. Standard One pupils in Butere Primary School could not hide their happiness after their teacher showed them the laptops.

However, the Government should channel more funds to schools in Turkana County where pupils have been learning under trees. It is pointless to supply laptops to such schools without considering the state of their infrastructure.

Some schools across the country still do not have power. The Government need to ensure power is available in all schools because laptops cannot work without electricity.

Even as the laptops are given to schools, we have to consider some of the things that are required to make learning effective. Key among them are qualified personnel, security and space. It is now upon school managementteams to facilitate and ensure this.
