Is Uhuru -Ruto 'marriage' a scam ?

It won’t be long now till William Ruto sheds his already common tears in public again. The deputy president has taken too much already. He should be letting go anytime from now. He probably doesn’t understand yet why his political boat keeps rocking time and again. The answer is however very simple and out in plain sight. What’s more, lots of people had foreseen this a while back.

Unlike what most people believe, the good William Ruto is not a man in quest of power. He has never been in politics for the sheer power it comes with but for the material gains it brings. It is for this reason that he very easily settled for the vice president’s slot rather than the top post and understandably so. It is this quest for wealth that has put Ruto right on the path of antagonism not just with those he shares political platforms with but also his mates back in the Rift.

People may have forgotten that Ruto ascended into his current position from a very financially humble background. However, nature never forgets. The rich folk can stand the poor, never for long though. This is the main reason why problems continue hitting the Jubilee coalition this far. While Uhuru Kenyatta comes from a wealthy family, Ruto’s case is the opposite.

As Uhuru was growing up right in the house on top of the hill, Ruto was walking barefoot somewhere in Kamagut. While Uhuru schooled at the St. Marys School, his vice attended Wareng Secondary school. Uhuru went ahead to further his studies in Amherst College, Massachusetts while Ruto settled for a place in the University of Nairobi with help from the government.

Uhuru pursued a degree in Political Science and Economics as his counterpart took the lesser Botany and Zoology. After their studies, Uhuru settled down immediately into management, being put in charge of the vast family business while Ruto was forced into the not-well-paying teaching profession. All through, Uhuru was exposed to massive wealth and finances while his friend struggled to fend for himself.

Years later, Uhuru Kenyatta got into politics, albeit by default since his father was the founding president. Ruto on the other hand got into politics by chance, having had the rare opportunity to meet President Daniel Moi. The former president had requested to see him simply because he had prayed very well at a function he was in attendance.

With all these in consideration, the lives, beliefs and cultures of Uhuru and Ruto are complete opposites. Their political marriage is one that was meant for the shorter satisfaction of each other’s wants; Uhuru’s looking for power as Ruto’s sought wealth. As such, it now seems like both are getting tired of each other. We no longer see the two dressed in matching outfits as they used to. They no longer attend meetings together. They do not face the press together anymore. Something is amiss. Why didn’t Uhuru defend his vice when the numerous character injuring allegations on land grabbing surfaced? Why did Uhuru visit the famous Sagana Lodge without his vice?  The one place where cabinet reshuffles are conducted.

Ruto’s political career seems to be plunging down so fast and he doesn’t understand it a single bit. He has dined with the rich and mighty simply because of that single prayer he offered in front of Mzee Moi. Now the old man is gone and Ruto will have to brave the cold for a while.

In politics however, time changes everything. Ruto can still change his fortunes in the political arena. He just has to get more cunning to play his cards away from the eyes of the crowd.
