Mwirigi not giving up on promotion

After failing to have his handicap improved in the last weekend’s promotion by Kenya Polo Association Handicap Committee, Mike Mwirigi is determined to see his (handicap) improved in the next sitting of the committee.

Mwirigi said he is not disappointed after failing to win the committee’s favour in last weekend’s Eagle Challenge Cup at Manyatta Polo Club in Gilgil but his focus is to see himself in the next promotion list.

He was last promoted in July to handicap 0, which still stands to-date but that is not enough for him.

“My last handicap promotion was two months back and I hope to have it improved to a positive digit very soon and that’s why I’m taking each event seriously in the fight for top honours,” Mwirigi told Standard Sports.

“When I have my handicap improved, I feel good and that’s the way to go in my future assignments."

Asked if he is far from another handicap promotion, he said: "I’m quite close to another one after mine was moved in July.”

He said he looks forward to improving his handicap to 0.5 in the coming year.

Mwirigi captained the Davis and Shirtliff team that lifted the Subsidiary Cup of the Eagle Challenge Cup in the four-team-round robin matches with maximum points after winning all their matches.

Other members of the team were handicap -1 Bobby Kamani, Daisy Oldenburg (-1.5) and Josephine Gauld (-2) for a total team handicap of -4.5.

Mwirigi trains three times a week without the assistance of a coach.

“As of now, I only do my sessional training privately in the field and polish it up with YouTube videos to improve my play,” he said.
