Mwangi Kiunjuri: I turned my home into church during Covid lockdown

When the government closed churches and entertainment joints as Covid-19 cases soared, many worshippers didn’t know what to do. Kenyans, who seldom missed church services, felt the pinch and survived on live TV and radio services by leading clerics.

But as some were deprived of the singing, dancing and preaching, former Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri’s family turned their home into a church, at least on Sundays. Kiunjuri made the revelation at a fundraiser in aid of EAPC-Kariene in Meru, saying his family could not do without normal church services.

Kiunjuri said he, as the head of the family, was the preacher, as other family members were assigned other roles to make the services a success.

“There was a preacher, another leading the praise and worship, and someone reading the Bible. We had a full church though I sometimes forgot I was the designate preacher! Sometimes, I would only  remember in the morning that it was my turn to preach,” he revealed.

Kiunjuri said he loves to worship and loves to sing gospel songs even in the morning. He said his life has been full of miracles as God has always been with him.

“I have never been worried all my life. I was not brought up in a rich family. I wore shoes for the first time when I went to secondary school. But that did not stop me from becoming an MP, an assistant minister for 10 years, a minister for four years, party leader and I’m in leadership to date,” he said.

The Service Party of Kenya leader said because of God’s favour, he has never been out of leadership.
“If I am sacked as minister, I become a party leader. If I am sacked as party leader I become a church elder. I am always relevant,” Kiunjuri told the worshippers, who included Central Imenti MP Moses Kirima, who is also a pastor in the EAPC.
