Nairobi, Kenya: Brookhurst International School (BIS) shone during the 2015 Bush Schools Tournament at Alliance High School, Nairobi, at the weekend.

BIS, who were taking part for the first time in the tournament that is open for both local and international schools, thrashed Parklands High 20-0 in a one-sided basketball encounter.

Santiago Geng scored 10 points to steer BIS to victory. Joshua Ashioya contributed five points, while Joseph Kamau and Lawrence Chebii notched two and three points respectively.

BIS went ahead to thrash Rungiri High School 14-4. During this encounter, Geng scored seven points, Abdiazis Yusuf contributed four while Payne Omari scored three in the basketball matches played on round robin.

In swimming, Alexander Sevil won BIS their first medal in the games by timing 33 seconds in boys’ 50m free style to take silver.

“This (medal) is a great encouragement. I am confident that soon I will be winning important medals for this country,” Sevil told FeverPitch. The school’s Gilbert Odhiambo emerged most promising swimmer.

In football, hosts Alliance Boys were crowned champions after edging out Nairobi School 4-3 on post-match penalties in the final of the tournament sponsored by mobile phone service providers Safaricom and Airtel, Lucozade, Indomie and Nairobi Sports House.

 “It was great taking part in Bush Schools Tournament. It introduced my students to new levels of interaction,” said Brookhurst coach Kevin Cheruiyot.

The school’s director Ruth Waweru said they are looking forward to taking part in Disney Cup and Dallas tournament in the United States and the Warrior Keele tourney in England later this year.

Meanwhile, Kisumu Day Secondary School edged Homa Bay Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) 1-0 to emerge the football champions during the fifth edition of Buop Open tournament played at Homa Bay High School at the weekend.

Kisumu Day had beaten Migori Boys 1-0 in the semi-finals as Homa Bay KMTC edged Upper Hill ‘A’ from Nairobi County 1-0 in the event that saw last year’s football champions Wiobiero from Homa Bay County knocked of the title race after a 1-0 loss to Upper Hill A in the quarter finals.

In girl’s football, Asumbi TTC from Homa Bay Country edged Ugari from Migori County 1-0 to emerge new champions. In rugby, hosts Homa Bay High School carried the day after beating Homa Bay KMTC 7-0.

In boy’s hockey, Kisumu Day emerged champions while Asumbi Girls won in the girls’ title. Migori Warriors and Mabera Girls were crowned the boys’ and girls’ champions respectively in basketball. Asumbi TTC reigned in women’s netball.

In volleyball, Chianda Boys and Asumbi TTC were crowned champions in the men and women’s categories respectively. The winners in handball were Ulanda Girls and Chianda Boys.

Homa Bay County Governor Cyprian Awiti, who closed the event said: “I want to encourage our young people to value sporting activities. Awiti gave Sh100,000 to support the tournament.

Homa Bay High School Principal Andrew Buop said the tournament is aimed at nurturing talent among the youth.
