Kenya:Sh2b water project initiated

The governments of Kenya and Belgium have initiated a Sh2 billion water project at Sabor Forest.

The project expected to benefit over 64,000 residents of Iten and Tambach towns is set to be operational by November 2016.

The project is also expected to raise the economic standards of the two towns. Investors have been shying away from Iten following unreliable water supply.

The Belgian government will foot 35 per cent of the total cost while the remainder will be serviced in form of a soft loan.

Belgium envoy to Kenya Roxane de Bilderling said yesterday her government had stepped up efforts to help the devolution dream in the country through support of community development projects.

“We are determined to contribute to the success of devolution through supporting development projects. We are also seeing possibilities of extending the project to reach more people,” said Ms Bilderling while on tour of the project.

Governor Alex Tolgos who accompanied the envoy said the project was a big relief to his administration since it coincided with a Spatial plan for Iten town, which will also include a sewerage plant.

“We have been facing a big challenge of water provision,” he said.
