Where goats compete to raise funds for charity

A majority of locals could not have imagined goats competing in a race and the winner taking home an award.

But this was the case at an unusual event that attracted sports lovers in South Coast who thronged Leisure lodge golf course recently to witness the feat.

42 goats battled it out in 11 races and the top three winners walked away with cash prize. The winner received Sh5,000 while first and second runners up got Sh3,000 and Sh2,000 respectively.

It was amazing to see some of the goats accompanied by jockeys following a 30-metre track while others went crazy and instead of jumping over the hurdles passed under them. Participants rented the goats for Sh500.

“This is the 14th year we have been involved in such a competition and want to raise Sh1 million that will go to the East Africa Women’s League for charities,” said the organiser, Polyn Mackenzie.
