Three suspects linked to doctor's killing to remain in custody for six days

Three suspects arrested over the killing of a Narok-based doctor will remain in custody for six days to enable police to conclude investigations.

A wife of the deceased Vivian Jeruto, Philip Kimutai and Jonah Kiprop were on Tuesday arraigned in Kapsabet after being arrested, two months after the body of Dr Caleb Tanui was found near King'wal swamp, one kilometre from his home in Nandi County.

According to the police report, Jeruto is accused of allegedly conspiring with the two other suspects to kill her husband.

The three were arrested following public protests last weekend over the doctor's killing.

The DCI officers told Magistrate John Orengo that there were more suspects still at large and they wanted 14 days to piece together evidence and file charges against them.

But Mr Orengo directed the police to conclude investigations in six days and present the suspects before the court on June 19.

"All suspects and the charges against each of them should be ready in a week's time," directed Orengo.

The trio was arrested after one of them confessed to having witnessed and aided the transportation of the body of the gynaecologist and dumped it along the Eldoret-Kisumu highway.

Doris Chemoss, the Nandi Central County police commander, said that the adversely mentioned suspects have been urged to surrender themselves to the police for their security.

"We have obtained evidence from witnesses as we wait for the postmortem report to be concluded by the homicide detectives. This will help to establish the suspects directly involved in the murder incident," she stated.

However, initial reports indicated that Tanui allegedly died as a result of excessive consumption of alcohol as reported by the family members.
