Ian Duncan was declared the winner of the KCB Mobile Banking Kisumu rally, which ended in controversial circumstances after an accident involving Sandeep Jandu and Gurdeep Mehangra.

It was Duncan’s first win of the 2012 since triumphing at the season closing Mombasa Rally last year. But rally community was reeling in shock and disbelief when death was reported from the rally section.

Reports reaching the service park said one spectator died on the spot after being involved in an accident with Jandu’s Subaru Impreza N10 car. Sandeep’s car rolled eight times just 400 meters to the end of competitive stage five at Awasi.

The car lost control in the competitive section, rolled over multiple times and in the process killed a young spectator who was watching the rally by the roadside.

A decision was arrived at to end the rally after penultimate service-in at the Simba Yard in Chemelil. What this meant was that the total cumulative time counted only up to stage eight. Clerk of the Course Amit Matharu posted a bulletin confirming the cancellation of the three-stage last loop, which totalled 24kilometers.

Casualties in Kisumu rally were Carl Tundo, Alastair Cavenagh, Onkar Rai (all radiator), Peter Horsey (electrical), Joan Nesbitt and T. Jones (rear axle), Alasdair Keith (rolled) and Tejvir Rai.

The new Subaru Impreza N16 of Tejvir Rai and George Mwangi caught fire end of stage six control.

"We don’t know what the cause of the fire was. We just handed in our time card and the car caught fire. Luckily we managed to put it off." Tejvir’s navigator George Mwangi said.
