Focus on two-wheel drivers as KNRC season concludes

Its all systems go as the KCB Mtaani Rally gets underway in Mariakani on Sunday.

The event marks the conclusion of the eighth leg Kenya National Rally Championship which has traversed Kisumu, Nairobi, Eldoret, Eldama Ravine and over to the Coast.

Ian Duncan’s participation in the Mombasa Motor Club (MMC)-organised rally is a mere formality as he sealed the KNRC title at the Guru Nanak Rally in October.

But the KNRC champion will be looking forward to overcoming the challenge of Azar Anwar, the Horseys, Alex and Peter, Baldev Singh Chager and Dalbit team’s Alastair Cavenagh and Carl Tundo.

Focus will, however, be on the 2WD Championship, which heads to the homestretch with leader James Kirimi and Joe Muchiri going head to head.

Others in the 2WD are Champion Leo Varese, Gurmit Thethy and Mombasa-based ‘Thumbs Up’ team’s Nadeem Kana who is unveiling his new Subaru 2WD.

Drivers will also be gunning to finish various KNRC Divisions on a high.

The Classic Car Cup is set for a volatile finish with Aslam Khan rejoicing in the 20th position of the recent KQ East African Safari Classic.

MMC are working round the clock to ensure the success of the event. The MMC Secretary Issak Ghalia said scrutineering will be at Mombasa Railway Station on December 10.

The host hotel is Hotel Sapphire which is also the Rally HQs on Saturday December 10.

Ghalia said speeches on the race day (December 11) begin at 6.30am at KCB Mariakani Branch.

The first car will the flagged off outside Mariakani KCB at 7am. There will be three stages being repeated twice at Matopeni, Mtaa and Mnyenzeni.

Service park is at Mnyenzeni Primary School. The 2WD will do Matopeni and Mtaa stages once, according to Ghalia.

Meanwhile, Kisumu-based Team Kibos are all set for KCB Mtaani Rally.

As a team, Kibos are working aggressively on their pace notes and preparations for the event are in full gear.

Team Kibos acquired an ex-Lee Rose Mitsubishi EVO 9 piloted in the Guru Nanak Rally by Jassi Chatthe and navigated by Gugu Panesar.
