Wake up and realise your dreams

You have to dream before your dreams can come true. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

I dream that one day I will have a yellow and airy kitchen. It will be large enough for family and friends to sit in and engage me as I prepare sumptuous meals.

When done cooking, we will all sit around the huge table and enjoy the meal. The kitchen will be warm and cosy, and will even have space to allow for a little play with all my boys.

My dream is no longer young, but it remains my dream; a dream I will keep at, until I actualise it. And so I dream on...

I Have a Dream is the title of the public speech by Martin Luther King, Jr when he was advocating for racial equality and an end to racial discrimination. This famous quote by the Nobel Peace Price winner has seen many of us embrace our dreams and see to it that our goals are met.

I read that a person without dreams is as good as dead. For what motivation does he or she have for a better life? Why does he or she want to wake up tomorrow if they have no idea of how they want their life to pan out?

Many of us have dreams; some of them are big, others small. While some of our dreams are practical, others seem out of this world.

Some of us do not know what our dreams are; yet a number of us have our dreams at our fingertips.

Are you discontent with your world? Are you tired of your everyday existence and just want to better your world? Then you have a dream.

I asked a friend if someone is constantly discontent with what they have, is he/ she a whiner? She told me that dissatisfaction is the beginning of big things “How will I ever improve on my lot if I am content with all that I have all the time?” I want to know whether I am ‘normal’, or whether it is only I who seems to keep wanting this and that.

I asked another friend what her dreams are; she paused before telling me that she has no dreams. I tell her how lucky she is — for it can only mean that she long achieved her dreams and is content.

She told me that was not the case. She long stopped dreaming when she realised that it was almost futile to achieve her dreams. Now she has become comfortable with her rather mundane existence.

She told me that our conversation jolted her to reality, and that she was going to start dreaming again.

I told her not to worry, for the fact that she realised she had ‘no’ dreams meant she had embarked on that new journey of dreaming.

Gurus of goal setting recommend that one keeps a picture of the object of their desire where they can see it all the time.

Then you are reminded of it every day. If you cannot picture yourself achieving the goal, chances are that you will not. But if otherwise, then keep dreaming... because big stuff is borne of dreams.
