Daggers are drawn over the vacant Meta Meta school house. Though Thunder hasn’t yet made good his threat to camp at the school with his entire household as IDPS are wont, he has taken practical steps to stop Annette from accessing the house.
Last week, he went to Town and bought two giant Viro padlocks with which he used to lock the house’s burglar proof metal door. Claiming to be a victim of tribalism, he has gotten sizeable support from both the teaching and non-teaching staff.
Many who feel threatened by Annette’s proposal to use the school farm in raising funds for the school are on Thunder’s side. Flo says Annette has stirred a hornets’ nest. According to rumours from Schola, our reliable rumour mill caretaker, Thunder also has the backing of Wangu Wa Makeri, our mean deputy school head.
Wa Makeri is suspicious that there is an elaborate scheme by Okonkwo, the fierce school head, to help Annette take over her office. She is even said to have attended a weekend night meeting, which was held in a backroom at JJ’s - our popular local joint. The meeting, dubbed ‘coalition of the willing’ by Vasco Da Gama, the geography teacher, is said to have lasted till the small hours of the morning.
Drinks and ‘nyama choma’ were in plenty. Strategies to frustrate Annettes claim to the school house and also deal a mortal blow to the emerging alliance of Okonkwo, Annette, Donatta and Tom the Bursar were crafted. Okonkwo, a principal who has outlived many scandals by simply doing nothing and leaving them to naturally die on their own, has been quiet.
Affirmative action
Those close to him say he is in favour of the matter being resolved through the schools established structures, which he controls.
Thunder claims to have incurred a lot of expenses renovating the house. Knowing that he was the automatic next occupant as per Meta Meta’s tradition, he made sure that the house had a fresh coat of paint. He even claims to have engaged a certain paint expert he refers to as Wa Marangi.
Apparently, the previous occupant had been cooking with firewood and the house was covered in soot. Donatta, who is strangely in Annette’s camp, swears that she bumped into Thunder buying cheap Jua Kali paint at Nairobi’s Gikomba market where she had gone to buy ‘camera outfits’ for her ‘Donatta and Son’s boutique’.
Thunder further wants to be compensated for the mental anguish and psychological trauma caused to him by Okonkwo’s failure to honour the school’s age-old tradition on staff houses. He is even rumoured to be considering engaging a lawyer to press his claims if the house is not officially allocated to him.
Annette on the other hand is not sitting pretty. With Donatta’s support, she has whipped some members of staff to her side. They are claiming discrimination on the grounds that Annette is a woman and are demanding that she should be allocated the house in line with the country’s constitution on affirmative action towards women. They have vowed to strip naked to press their claims!
