Kenya National Union of Teacher (Knut) employees in Trans-Nzoia County have been locked out of their offices over unpaid rent amounting to Sh410, 000.

Trans-Nzoia Teachers Enterprise Limited (TENT), who are the landlords, placed padlocks on the doors of the union’s offices in Kitale.

TENT management, led by the chairman John Mwangi, said the union has not paid rent for one year, a statement the branch Executive Secretary Waswa Makhinu concurred with. TENT is owned by retired teachers in the county.

Mr Mwangi accused the union of issuing them with a bouncing cheque for Sh150, 000.

Trans Nzoia Knut Executive Secretary Makhinu Waswa blamed the Teachers Service Commission for the mess.

“We have not received remittances from our members for five months now. We are unable to pay staff salaries and allowances for union officials.”
