Harambee Stars bundled out of Cecafa tournament

Kenya have been knocked out of the ongoing Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa) Senior Challenge Cup after going down 5-3 on post-match penalties to Rwanda’s Amavubi.

Sudan also made it to the last four after edging out neighbours South Sudan also 5-3 on post-match penalties.

Both matches ended in a barren draw after full time. The Rwandese scored their penalties through Fiston Munerezo, Djihad Bizimana, Faustine Usengimana, Dominique Savio and Abdul Rwatubyaye. Noah Abich, David Owino and Jesse Were scored for Kenya while Eric Johanna had his shot saved by the goalkeeper.

Kenya started the match well and should have wound up the match in normal time given the number of chances they created. Jacob Keli had the first opportunity to put Stars ahead only to be denied by Eric Ndayishimiye in goal for Rwanda.

By the fifth minute, Kenya had forced four corners with Michael Olunga coming close on at least two occasions.

But the Rwandese hit back in the sixth minute with Stars keeper Boniface Oluoch forced to put out a point blank range shot by dangerman Jean Baptiste. Another corner just before the tenth minute proved Kenya’s dominance in the opening minutes of the match.

Then Oluoch denied Baptiste in the tenth minute handing Rwanda their first corner of the match.

After that Olunga watched in disbelief as his goal bound shot went just wide.

It was getting frustrating for the big man who has not scored in two matches, and one minute after failing to score he found himself booked for handling the ball.

The Kenyan players unable to break into the Rwandese backline opted for shots from distance.

First Cliftone Miheso tried his luck in the 20th minute before Teddy Akumu’s effort went across the opponents’ goal-line. Both Keli and Johanna also had chances but were fruitless.

In between the Kenyan attacks Yussuffu Habimana forced a save from Oluoch, but it was Olunga who finished the first half for Kenya on a high but failed to connect with a bicycle kick.

In the second half, Kenya continued to push and Abich’s delivery to Olunga just failed to reach its target.

Then Johanna threatened with a long free kick but it was well cleared. Rwanda’s first chance in the half came five minutes after resumption but Jacques Tusiyenge was denied by Oluoch.

Earlier on, Sudan edged out South Sudan 5-3 on post-match penalties.

Sudan goalkeeper Ekram Salim was the hero of the day stopping Sylvester Okiri’s spot kick before scoring the winner.

The match went to post-match penalties after ending in a barren draw in full-time.
