Schools volleyball: Malava and Kwanthanze on course to recapture titles

Former national boys and girls volleyball champions Malava and Kwanthanze are a match away from recapturing their titles.

They won the respective semi-final matches yesterday to book a place in today’s final as the Secondary Schools National Term Two B Games entered? the homestretch at Moi Nyeri Complex Primary School.

It was sweet revenge for the duo who suffered in the hands of Cheptil and Soweto Academy last year. East Africa champions Malava lost to Cheptil last year in Kisumu to relinquish their crown. It was payback time and Malava returned the favour to Cheptil.

Focused on revenge, Malava did not leave anything to chance and fought to a 3-0(25-22, 25-20, 25-18) victory securing a finals slot. They will lock horns with Sengera SDA who beat newcomers Kangundo 3-1(25-19, 25-18, 28-30, 25-15) in the second semis clash. Cheptil who lost a chance to win their sixth national title will battle Kangundo in third place playoffs and the remaining ticket to the East Africa Games set for Gulu, Uganda.

Two-time national and East Africa champions Kwanthanze who failed to make it to last year’s nationals after falling to Soweto in the finals of the now defunct Metropolitan Region also avenged their loss. They beat Soweto in straight sets to inch closer to the trophy.[Elizabeth Mburugu]
